Character Name: Shizuka Doumeki
Canon: xxxHolic
Canon Point: From chapter 119 , when he’s sitting outside Watanuki’s room, still covered in blood (both his and Watanuki’s.)
Background/History: [canon background] [character history]
Personality: Doumeki is a popular guy at school. Why this is? It’s hard to say. He’s good at sports, he’s on the classroom board, but Doumeki is a guy who’s more seen than heard. He’s far from silent, yet neither does he go out of his way to say unnecessary things, leaving his thoughts to translate through action rather than words. What is said is mostly to the point, though it is good to note that he has quite a biting sarcasm when he chooses to use it.
Doumeki is also a very grounded person. Through his many adventures alongside Watanuki and Yuuko, he rarely seems surprised or startled by any odd turn of events. He takes many things in stride, from meeting kitsune to a rain sprite to finding a dead girl in a house. That doesn’t mean he doesn’t have the ability to get upset by a situation, but he does know how to keep a handle on his own emotions and his expression of them is often more subtle. He is also on the general whole a kind person. He’s not touchy-feely per say, but he often expresses his emotions through action rather than words (a pat on the head, walking someone home to keep them safe, eating their cooking, etc.)
I feel it is also important to mention Doumeki’s grandfather, Haruka, and his influence on Doumeki’s upbringing. Doumeki often talks about stories his grandfather told him, and also that it was his grandfather that had him dressed as a girl when he was a child because of an old tradition that dresses up weak boy children as girls so that they will grow stronger as they grow up. Combine this with growing up in a temple, and Doumeki essentially grew up to become a walking Japanese mythology dictionary. It also gave him a sense of respect and a wariness about the supernatural, and enough of a sense to know a dangerous situation when he sees one. We do know that he is an excellent archer, and, because of his level of skill, it is easy to infer that he has been doing it for quite some time.
Doumeki is fiercely loyal to those he cares about, though it may never be said out loud. He’ll go to great lengths to protect those people closest to him. However, that isn’t to say that he’s about to go throw himself under a bus, or sacrifice himself for the greater good. Though Doumeki incurs a multitude of injuries from protecting Watanuki (the loss of an eye [which he then gains back later,] a severe injury on his right arm right before an important archery match, as well as holding onto an exacto-knife blade in order to keep it from stabbing Watanuki,) none of them were done with sacrifice in mind; rather Doumeki was better equipped to handle the situation, and therefore stepped up to the plate in order to protect Watanuki. No, Doumeki has a very good understanding and empathy for the feelings of those who are sacrificed for; in fact, the first time we see him really angry is when someone sacrifices half of their sight for the return of half of his own. On that note, it should also be said that he will go to great lengths to find a solution to a problem if the immediate solution doesn’t work. He will always find some way to use knowledge and information to his advantage. Speaking on him getting angry, his anger is a rare thing, and it’s a quiet, focused anger. He doesn’t get rough unless he has to, but he’s not above it, certainly. He will also go against the wishes of someone he cares about to save them from being hurt.
Abilities/Powers:
Archery - Doumeki is a highly skilled archer. He has excelled in competitions over the years, and practices regularly.
Monster Repellant - Doumeki’s own spirit naturally has the ability to repel supernatural monsters and ghosts. He is repulsive to them; he naturally makes them want to stay as far away as possible. It’s never really explained how exactly this works, only that it’s something that Doumeki was born with and, until he was told about it by Yuuko, had no idea he had that ability.
Monster Exorcism - Doumeki has the ability to exorcise supernatural monsters and ghosts. Using his bow, he creates arrows of his own spirit, which he then shoots at them to exorcise them.
Japanese mythology knowledge - Doumeki was raised in a Shinto temple, not to mention received many lessons in Japanese mythology from his grandfather. He’s a veritable wealth of knowledge in that regard. He also knows how to write and recognize protective wards and spells in relation to ancient Japanese beliefs. His, however, do not have near the power of his grandfather’s; his are weak, at best.
General Physique - Doumeki may not be an Olympian, but he is considered rather athletic. He’s good at sports in general, and at least seemed to have the ability to dodge things that come at him. He is not, however, trained in combat.
Items/Weapons: His bow, a quiver of arrows, and a stone egg.
Sample Entry: TBA
Sample Entry Two: The motion, by now, was automatic. Eyes on the target, fixed on the point he wanted to hit. Reach back to retrieve an arrow and fit it onto the string, against the bow, aim. Draw back the string, breathe in—breathe out, and fire. It was a process Doumeki had learned to almost perfect through years of practice. His aim was unerring, his arrows true. Of that, he made sure of. Before, it had been a respect for the sport that had driven him to do well. Now, it wasn’t an option, it was a necessity. If he missed, then…well, that was something he wouldn’t think about.
Or rather, it was something he tried not to think about, but it was like a persistent voice in the back of his head. It taunted him now, as tendrils of doubt crept into his mind. Would he always be able to protect That Person? Would there would be a time when something would go wrong; when he wouldn’t be fast enough, or precise enough, or his hand would slip just so--and they would be lost, because Doumeki had failed. These thoughts were just enough to distract him, causing his concentration to slip just as he fired the arrow. It hit the target on the outside of the second ring—not a bad shot by any means, but certainly not where his last four shots had landed.
Doumeki lowered his bow, eyes narrowing as he walked to the target to retrieve the arrows. He pulled the first four out of the bull’s-eye, before turning his attention to the last one. It wasn’t far off the target, but just far enough. What if this had been one of those situations? He might’ve missed what he was aiming at completely, and in that case, he wouldn’t get a second shot. They might be lost before he even had the chance to shoot again. The archer gritted his teeth just slightly, the only indication of his thoughts a furrow between his eyebrows. He reached to pull the arrow out with a hard yank, before returning to the firing point. As he stepped back up to the line and prepared to fire again, the voice returned with its ever persistent question: What if you aren’t able to protect That Person? This time, Doumeki pushed it aside. That won’t happen, he thought, because I won’t miss again.
